1. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

- And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: Ex. 13:21

- But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Ex. 14:29

- Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 1 Cor. 12:1

2. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

- And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses. Ex. 14:31

- Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Rom. 6:3

- Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 1 Pet. 3:20

3. And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

- Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. Ex. 16:4

- And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. Deut. 8:3

- The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. Ps. 105:40

4. And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

- Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. Ex. 17:6

- And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. Num. 20:11

- He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. Ps. 78:15

5. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

- Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: Num. 14:28

- But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? Heb. 3:17

- I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. Jude 1:5

6. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

- And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? Num. 11:4

- And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth. Num. 11:31

- Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 1 Cor. 10:11

7. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

- And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. Ex. 32:4

- And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. Ex. 32:19

- But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. 1 Cor. 5:11

8. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

- And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. Num. 25:1

- And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand. Num. 25:9

- Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 1 Cor. 6:18

9. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

- Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? Ex. 17:2

- And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not? Ex. 17:7

- And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Num. 21:6

10. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

- For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. Ex. 12:23

- Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me. Num. 14:29

- And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite. 2 Sam. 24:16

11. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

- And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. Rom. 13:11

- For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Rom. 15:4

- Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 1 Cor. 10:6

12. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

- Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Prov. 16:18

- Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief. Prov. 28:14

- Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: Rom. 11:20

13. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

- Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations; Deut. 7:9

- Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: James 1:13

- The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: 2 Pet. 2:9

14. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

- Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 1 Cor. 10:7

- And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Cor. 6:16

- Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. 1 John 5:21

15. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

- But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 1 Cor. 2:15

- Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. 1 Cor. 8:1

- Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 1 Thess. 5:21

16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

- And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. Matt. 26:26

- And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. Acts 2:42

- After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 1 Cor. 11:25

17. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

- So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Rom. 12:5

- For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 1 Cor. 12:12

- Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 1 Cor. 12:27

18. Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

- And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron's and his sons': it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire. Lev. 2:3

- Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it shall be eaten in the holy place: it is most holy. Lev. 7:6

- Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? 1 Cor. 9:13

19. What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

- They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. Deut. 32:21

- They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. Jer. 10:5

- As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. 1 Cor. 8:4

20. But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

- They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. Deut. 32:17

- Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, Ps. 106:37

- And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Rev. 9:20

21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

- And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 1 Kings 18:21

- But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. Isa. 65:11

- And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Cor. 6:16

22. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

- Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Ex. 20:5

- They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. Deut. 32:21

- That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he. Eccles. 6:10

23. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

- But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. Rom. 14:15

- All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1 Cor. 6:12

- But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. 1 Cor. 8:9

24. Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

- Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. Rom. 15:2

- Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 1 Cor. 13:5

- Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Phil. 2:4

25. Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

- And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. Acts 10:15

- Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. 1 Cor. 8:7

- For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 1 Tim. 4:4

26. For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

- Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is. Deut. 10:14

- The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Ps. 24:1

- If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. Ps. 50:12

27. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

- Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. Matt. 22:4

- And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: Luke 10:8

- For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Rom. 14:2

28. But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

- But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. Rom. 14:15

- Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. 1 Cor. 8:7

- For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; 1 Cor. 8:10

29. Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

- I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Rom. 14:14

- But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. 1 Cor. 8:9

- For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. 1 Cor. 9:19

30. For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

- And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. Matt. 15:36

- He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. Rom. 14:6

- For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 1 Tim. 4:4

31. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

- When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. Deut. 8:10

- And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Col. 3:17

- If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Pet. 4:11

32. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

- Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. Rom. 14:13

- Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. 1 Cor. 8:13

- That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ. Phil. 1:10

33. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

- Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. Rom. 15:2

- To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 1 Cor. 9:22

- Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth. 1 Cor. 10:24
