Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings, - That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; Eph. 4:22 - Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Eph. 4:25 - Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. James 1:21 2. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: - I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 1 Cor. 3:2 - But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: Eph. 4:15 - For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. Heb. 5:12 3. If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. - O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Ps. 34:8 - For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, - The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. Luke 9:22 - And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; Eph. 2:20 5. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Rom. 12:1 - But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. Phil. 4:18 - By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. Heb. 13:15 6. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. - They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. Ps. 34:5 - Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isa. 28:16 - Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together. Zech. 10:4 7. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, - The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. Ps. 118:22 - Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Matt. 21:42 - This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Acts 4:11 8. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. - And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Isa. 8:14 - Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; - Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: Ex. 19:5 - And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken. Isa. 62:12 - And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Rev. 1:6 10. Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. - Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God. Hos. 1:9 - And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God. Hos. 2:23 - And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. Rom. 9:26 11. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; - But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. Rom. 13:14 - And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Gal. 5:24 - As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 1 Pet. 1:14 12. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matt. 5:16 - That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Phil. 2:15 - Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 1 Pet. 3:16 13. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; - Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Rom. 13:1 - I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 1 Tim. 2:1 - Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, Titus 3:1 14. Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. - For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: Rom. 13:3 - For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Rom. 13:4 - And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 1 Pet. 3:13 15. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: - Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Titus 2:8 - Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Pet. 2:12 - Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 1 Pet. 3:16 16. As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. - What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Rom. 6:15 - For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Gal. 5:13 - But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. James 1:25 17. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. - My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change: Prov. 24:21 - Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Rom. 12:10 - Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Rom. 13:7 18. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. - Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God; Col. 3:22 - Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 1 Tim. 6:1 - Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Titus 2:9 19. For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. - Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Matt. 5:11 - Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Luke 6:22 - And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Acts 5:41 20. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. - But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; 1 Pet. 3:14 - For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. 1 Pet. 3:17 - If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 1 Pet. 4:14 21. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: - Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matt. 16:24 - For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. John 13:15 - Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Phil. 2:5 22. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: - And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Isa. 53:9 - For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Cor. 5:21 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. 4:15 23. Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: - And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, Matt. 27:39 - For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Heb. 12:3 - Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 1 Pet. 3:9 24. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Isa. 53:4 - Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isa. 53:12 - Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. 6:11 25. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. - The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. Ps. 23:1 - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
