Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: - For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Phil. 4:16 - Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thess. 1:1 - For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. 2 Tim. 4:10 2. And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, - And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. Luke 4:16 - Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Acts 8:35 - And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. Acts 9:20 3. Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. - And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:27 - But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ. Acts 9:22 - For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. Acts 18:28 4. And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. - Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. Acts 13:43 - But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. Acts 14:4 - And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. Acts 28:24 5. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. - But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. Acts 17:13 - For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. Rom. 10:2 - Timotheus my workfellow, and Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you. Rom. 16:21 6. And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; - And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, Acts 16:20 - For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: Acts 24:5 - But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. Acts 28:22 7. Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. - And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. Luke 23:2 - And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. John 19:12 - And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. Acts 16:21 8. And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. - When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Matt. 2:3 - If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. John 11:48 - When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; John 19:8 9. And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go. - And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. Josh. 9:15 - Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me? Job 17:3 - I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides. Philem. 1:19 10. And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. - Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket. Acts 9:25 - And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. Acts 17:14 - And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night; Acts 23:23 11. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. - O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Ps. 119:97 - Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them. Isa. 34:16 - Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39 12. Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. - And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord. Acts 9:42 - And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. Acts 17:4 - And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. Acts 18:8 13. But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. - But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Matt. 23:13 - And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. Acts 14:19 - But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. Acts 9:30 - And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. Acts 17:10 15. And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed. - After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; Acts 18:1 - And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. Acts 18:5 - Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone; 1 Thess. 3:1 16. Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. - And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. Ex. 32:19 - And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 1 Kings 19:10 - For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. Ps. 69:9 17. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. - Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: Prov. 1:20 - And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed. Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. - Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Prov. 26:12 - Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. Acts 6:9 - For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1 Cor. 1:21 19. And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? - And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. Matt. 10:18 - And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mark 1:27 - But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. Acts 28:22 20. For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. - I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing. Hos. 8:12 - For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Cor. 1:18 - But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Cor. 2:14 21. (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.) - A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth. Prov. 14:6 - For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 1 Cor. 1:22 - But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 2 Tim. 2:16 22. Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. - Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Acts 17:16 - And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? Acts 19:35 - But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. Acts 25:19 23. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. - Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. John 4:22 - And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Acts 17:30 - Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. Gal. 4:8 24. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; - Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? Isa. 66:1 - Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Acts 7:48 - And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: Acts 14:15 25. Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; - And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen. 2:7 - If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. Ps. 50:12 - Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? Rom. 11:35 26. And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; - And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Gen. 3:20 - When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. Deut. 32:8 - He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again. Job 12:23 27. That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: - For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? Deut. 4:7 - Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. Acts 14:17 - For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Rom. 1:20 28. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. - In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:10 - For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. Luke 20:38 - And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. Col. 1:17 29. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. - Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Ex. 20:4 - And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree? Isa. 44:19 - Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. Hab. 2:19 30. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: - And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:47 - Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. Acts 14:16 - For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Titus 2:11 31. Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. - Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth. Ps. 96:13 - For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: John 5:22 - In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Rom. 2:16 32. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. - Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. Acts 2:13 - And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. Acts 24:25 - But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 1 Cor. 1:23 33. So Paul departed from among them. - Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.
