↥ Heb. 7NT with xrefs 1. For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; - And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale. Gen. 14:17 - And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. Gen. 14:18 - The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Ps. 110:4 2. To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; - And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. Gen. 14:20 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. - As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Gen. 17:5 - And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. Gen. 17:6 5. And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: - And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. Num. 18:21 - Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe. Num. 18:26 - Thus ye also shall offer an heave offering unto the LORD of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give thereof the LORD's heave offering to Aaron the priest. Num. 18:28 6. But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. - That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; Gen. 22:17 - For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. - And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. Gen. 14:20 - And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. Num. 18:21 - Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. Heb. 7:4 10. For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. - And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; Gen. 35:11 - All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six; Gen. 46:26 - Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house unto my name. 1 Kings 8:19 11. If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? - I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Gal. 2:21 - For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. Heb. 7:28 - For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. Heb. 8:7 12. For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. - But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Num. 17:5 - And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honor from the LORD God. 2 Chron. 26:18 14. For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. - The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. - For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Rom. 8:3 - But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) - The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: - And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? 1 Sam. 2:28 - Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually. Jer. 33:18 - And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. Heb. 7:8 24. But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isa. 9:6 - Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. - And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin offering for atonement: and thou shalt cleanse the altar, when thou hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify it.
