For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. - For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Matt. 12:37 - If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. - Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. - But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! - They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. Ps. 17:10 - They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. Ps. 73:8 - An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire. Prov. 16:27 6. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. - Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. Ps. 120:2 - Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Prov. 18:21 - But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Matt. 15:18 7. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: - And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And immediately the cock crew. Matt. 26:74 10. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. Rev. 10:9 12. Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. - Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. - Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through? This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. - Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: 1 Cor. 2:6 - For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. 1 Cor. 3:19 - Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
