James 4

1. From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

- But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Rom. 7:23

- For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Gal. 5:17

- Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 1 Pet. 2:11

2. Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

- Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings. Mic. 3:4

- Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? Matt. 6:31

- Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:15

3. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

- And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. Isa. 1:15

- And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1 John 3:22

- And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 1 John 5:14

4. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

- No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matt. 6:24

- If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John 15:19

- Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Rom. 8:7

5. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

- And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen. 2:7

- And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them! Num. 11:29

- And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Cor. 6:16

6. But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

- Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. Prov. 3:34

- And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matt. 23:12

- Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Pet. 5:5

7. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

- Neither give place to the devil. Eph. 4:27

- Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Eph. 6:11

- Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 1 Pet. 5:9

8. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

- Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Isa. 1:16

- Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. Zech. 1:3

- Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? Mal. 3:7

9. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

- Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Matt. 5:4

- Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Luke 6:25

- For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Cor. 7:10

10. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

- The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. Ps. 147:6

- And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matt. 23:12

- Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 1 Pet. 5:6

11. Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

- Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor; I am the LORD. Lev. 19:16

- Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. Rom. 2:1

- Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings, 1 Pet. 2:1

12. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

- For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us. Isa. 33:22

- And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt. 10:28

- Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. Rom. 14:4

13. Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

- And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. Gen. 11:3

- Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Prov. 27:1

- And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. Luke 12:18

14. Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

- For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth. Ps. 102:3

- Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah. Ps. 39:5

- For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 1 Pet. 1:24

15. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

- There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. Prov. 19:21

- Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not? Lam. 3:37

- But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. Acts 18:21

16. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

- Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. Ps. 52:7

- Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Prov. 27:1

- Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 1 Cor. 5:6

17. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

- And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: Matt. 7:26

- And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. Luke 12:47

- And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. Rom. 14:23
