1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

- In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Gen. 1:1

- When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Prov. 8:24

- I and my Father are one. John 10:30

2. The same was in the beginning with God.

- Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; John 13:3

- And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. John 17:5

- (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 1 John 1:2

3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

- But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. 1 Cor. 8:6

- For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Col. 1:16

- Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Heb. 11:3

4. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

- For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. Ps. 36:9

- Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12

- But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. John 20:31

5. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

- For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. Isa. 60:2

- He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. John 1:10

- And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John 3:19

6. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

- And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. Matt. 11:14

- As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Mark 1:2

- Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. Luke 3:2

7. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

- And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? John 1:19

- And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. John 1:34

- Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. John 5:33

8. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

- And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. John 1:20

- Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. John 3:28

- Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Acts 19:4

9. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

- In him was life; and the life was the light of men. John 1:4

- And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John 3:19

- I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. John 12:46

10. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

- John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; John 1:26

- For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Col. 1:16

- Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 1 John 3:1

11. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

- Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: Ex. 19:5

- But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Matt. 15:24

- For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country. John 4:44

12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

- Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. John 13:20

- For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Rom. 8:15

- For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal. 3:26

13. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

- Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5

- Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. James 1:18

- Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 1 Pet. 1:23

14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

- For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Col. 2:9

- And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Tim. 3:16

- That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 1 John 1:1

15. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

- But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Mic. 5:2

- I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Matt. 3:11

- Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58

16. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

- They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lam. 3:23

- And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Eph. 3:19

- And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Col. 2:10

17. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

- And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

- For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Rom. 6:14

- Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Gal. 3:19

18. No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

- And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. Ex. 33:20

- All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Matt. 11:27

- Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. 1 Tim. 6:16

19. And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

- But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Matt. 3:7

- And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? Matt. 21:23

- Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. John 5:33

20. And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

- John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Luke 3:16

- Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. John 3:28

- And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. Acts 13:25

21. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

- The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; Deut. 18:15

- Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: Mal. 4:5

- And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Luke 1:17

22. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

- And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king? 1 Sam. 26:14

- So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me. 2 Sam. 24:13

- Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. John 5:33

23. He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

- Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. Eccles. 7:29

- The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isa. 40:3

- And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Luke 1:17

24. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

- And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? John 1:19

- But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. Acts 23:6

- For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. Acts 23:8

25. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

- Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. Ezek. 36:25

- And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. Mark 1:7

- John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. John 1:15

28. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

- And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Judg. 7:24

- And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. John 3:23

- And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode. John 10:40

29. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

- He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. Isa. 53:7

- Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 1 Cor. 5:7

- And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 1 John 3:5

- And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Acts 2:3

- Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

33. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

- And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 1 Sam. 16:12

- I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Matt. 3:11

- John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; John 1:26

34. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

- Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. Matt. 10:32

- Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. John 1:49

- For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. Acts 4:20

35. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

- Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? Matt. 9:14

- And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. Matt. 14:12

- One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. John 1:40

36. And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

- And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? Gen. 22:7

- And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. John 1:42

- The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. John 1:43

38. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

- Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. John 18:7

- Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. John 20:15

- Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. John 20:16

39. He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

- Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matt. 11:28

- And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. John 1:46

- And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, Acts 28:30

40. One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

- And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. Matt. 4:18

- Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Matt. 10:2

- One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, John 6:8

41. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

- And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it. Ezek. 34:24

- Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Dan. 9:25

- Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? John 4:29

42. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

- And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matt. 16:18

- And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Luke 22:61

- And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; Eph. 2:20

43. The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

- And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. Matt. 9:9

- Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. Matt. 19:21

- When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? John 6:5

44. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

- Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Matt. 11:21

- And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. Mark 6:45

- The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. John 12:21

45. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

- I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. Deut. 18:18

- Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. Jer. 23:5

- And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Luke 24:44

46. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

- And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. Matt. 2:23

- They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. John 7:52

- There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. John 21:2

47. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

- Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. Ps. 32:2

- And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Isa. 53:9

- But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Rom. 2:29

48. Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

- And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. 1 Kings 4:25

- And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. Isa. 65:24

- But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Matt. 6:6

49. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

- And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matt. 16:16

- And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. John 1:34

- She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. John 11:27

50. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

- Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. John 4:48

- Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12

- Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. John 20:29

51. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

- And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. Gen. 28:12

- And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: Matt. 3:16

- Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. Matt. 4:11
