↥ John 11NT with xrefs 1. Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. - In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. 2 Kings 20:1 - And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there. Matt. 21:17 - Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. Luke 10:38 2. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) - Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. Matt. 26:13 - And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. Mark 14:3 - Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. John 12:3 3. Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. - Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. John 11:5 - Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! John 11:36 - For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. Phil. 2:26 4. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. - This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. John 2:11 - Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. John 9:3 - And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. - Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! John 11:36 - As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. - For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. Isa. 55:8 - After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Hos. 6:2 - Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Acts 10:40 7. Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. - Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread. If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. - Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12 - I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. John 9:4 - Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. John 12:35 10. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. - The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. Prov. 4:19 - But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Matt. 6:23 - But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. 1 John 2:11 11. These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. - So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. Job 14:12 - And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, Matt. 27:52 - For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 1 Thess. 4:14 12. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. - It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. Ps. 127:2 - For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaister upon the boil, and he shall recover. Isa. 38:21 - And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. Mark 5:23 13. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. - Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: Matt. 1:24 - He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. Matt. 9:24 - But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. Luke 9:32 14. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. - Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. John 10:24 - These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. Hos. 6:2 - Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. John 11:39 - Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. Acts 5:10 18. Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: - And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there. Matt. 21:17 - And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, Mark 11:1 - And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. - And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days. 1 Sam. 31:13 - So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great. Job 2:13 - Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Rom. 12:15 20. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. - Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Luke 8:49 - Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. John 11:32 - And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? John 11:37 22. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matt. 28:18 - Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. John 9:31 - And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. John 16:23 23. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. - As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. Ps. 17:15 - Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. Isa. 26:19 - Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, John 5:28 24. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. - And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Dan. 12:2 - For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. Acts 23:8 - And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Acts 24:15 25. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: - For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. Luke 20:38 - For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. John 5:21 - And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. John 6:39 26. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24 - And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:40 27. She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. - And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matt. 16:16 - And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. John 4:42 - And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. John 6:69 28. And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. - Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. Matt. 2:7 - And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. Mark 10:49 - When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, John 2:9 29. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. - I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. Ps. 119:59 - When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. Ps. 27:8 - I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. Song 3:2 30. Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. - And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. Gen. 24:30 - And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. John 6:17 - Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. John 11:20 31. The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. - And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. Gen. 37:35 - And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. Mark 5:38 - And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. John 11:19 32. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. - And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. Matt. 2:11 - And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: Luke 8:41 - Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. John 11:21 33. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. - And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. Gen. 43:30 - And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. Mark 14:34 - Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. John 12:27 34. And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. - And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid. Mark 15:47 - And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. Mark 16:6 - He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. John 1:39 35. Jesus wept. - And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Luke 19:41 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. 4:15 - Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Heb. 5:7 36. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! - Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Ps. 78:20 - And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Mark 9:22 - And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. John 9:7 38. Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. - And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. Gen. 23:19 - Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. Dan. 6:19 - And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. Matt. 27:60 39. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? - Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:23 - When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. John 11:4 - But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Cor. 3:18 41. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. - At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Matt. 11:25 - Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Mark 11:24 - These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: John 17:1 42. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. - But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him. John 10:38 - Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. John 12:30 - For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. John 17:8 43. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. - And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? Isa. 8:19 - Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. Matt. 27:50 - Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, John 5:28 44. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. - And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? Luke 13:16 - Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. John 19:40 - And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. John 20:7 45. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. - Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. John 2:23 - And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done? John 7:31 - And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. John 11:19 46. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. - The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. John 5:15 - They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. John 9:13 - Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. Acts 5:25 47. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. - The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Ps. 2:2 - Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, Matt. 26:3 - Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. Acts 4:16 48. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. - When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. John 6:15 - But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. Acts 4:17 - For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. Acts 19:40 49. And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, - Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Prov. 26:12 - Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, Matt. 26:3 - And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. - Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. John 18:14 - For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. Rom. 5:7 - Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. Heb. 7:27 51. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; - And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the LORD: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually. Ex. 28:30 - He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. Isa. 53:8 - And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Matt. 16:17 52. And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. - And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Isa. 49:6 - Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? John 7:35 - And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. John 10:16 53. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. - But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. Matt. 21:38 - Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. John 5:18 - Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? John 7:19 54.
