And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. - And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. Luke 6:7 - And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. Luke 7:36 - And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. Luke 11:37 2. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. - And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. Luke 6:6 - And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, Luke 7:37 - And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. Luke 13:10 3. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? - And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. Matt. 12:10 - And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. Mark 3:4 - Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? Luke 6:9 4. And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; - And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Matt. 8:3 - Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. Matt. 9:29 - And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. Mark 8:22 5. And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? - If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him. Ex. 23:5 - Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again. Deut. 22:4 - And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? Matt. 12:11 6. And they could not answer him again to these things. - And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. Luke 20:26 - And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. Luke 20:40 - And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Acts 6:10 7. And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them. - And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, Matt. 23:6 - For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Luke 14:11 - I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 3 John 1:9 8. When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; - Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: Prov. 25:6 - Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; Luke 20:46 - And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. John 2:2 9. And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. - When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. Prov. 11:2 - Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Prov. 16:18 - Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. Jer. 2:36 10. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. - And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? 1 Sam. 15:17 - The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. Prov. 15:33 - For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen. Prov. 25:7 11. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. - For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks. Ps. 18:27 - A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. Prov. 29:23 - Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Pet. 5:5 12. Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. - For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? Matt. 5:46 - Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Matt. 6:1 - And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: James 2:3 13. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: - And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest. Deut. 14:29 - Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Isa. 58:7 - So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. Luke 14:21 14. And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. - He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Prov. 19:17 - And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. Matt. 25:46 - And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5:29 15. And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. - And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. Luke 13:29 - That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: - And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. Isa. 25:6 - And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Matt. 22:3 - Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Rev. 3:20 17. And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. - She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. Prov. 9:2 - Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. Matt. 22:4 - Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: Matt. 25:34 18. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. - When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken. Deut. 24:5 - And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! Luke 18:24 - But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 1 Tim. 6:9 19. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. - And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 2 Sam. 24:24 - That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. Ezra 7:17 - And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. Luke 12:19 20. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. - And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. Deut. 20:7 - If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:26 - But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. 1 Cor. 7:33 21. So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. - They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. Matt. 20:7 - So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do. Luke 17:10 - In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:2 23. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. - And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. Gen. 19:3 - For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. Rom. 11:25 - As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. Gal. 6:12 24. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper. - Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. Prov. 1:31 - Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Matt. 21:43 - Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Matt. 22:8 25. And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, - And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him. Mark 3:8 - And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again. Mark 10:1 - And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. Luke 9:37 26. If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. - If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Deut. 13:6 - Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant. Deut. 33:9 - He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Matt. 10:37 27. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. - Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matt. 11:29 - And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke 9:23 - The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. John 19:7 28. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? - And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Gen. 11:4 - Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: Matt. 21:33 - Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. Rev. 13:18 29. Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, - Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 1 Cor. 3:13 - Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Heb. 6:1 - For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 2 Pet. 2:20 30. Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. - Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished. Ezra 5:16 - I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years. Isa. 38:10 - For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. Rom. 2:24 31. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? - And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off. 1 Kings 20:11 - Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war. Prov. 20:18 - Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. Prov. 25:8 32. Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. - And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life. 1 Kings 20:31 - When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. Luke 12:58 - And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. Acts 12:20 33. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. - Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. Matt. 19:21 - Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. Luke 12:33 - Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, Phil. 3:8 34. Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? - Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Matt. 5:13 - Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another. Mark 9:50 - Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Col. 4:6 35. It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. - And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Luke 8:8 - If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
