1. Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

- The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. Matt. 11:19

- But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? Luke 5:30

- And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. Luke 19:7

2. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

- And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. Luke 5:29

- The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! Luke 7:34

3. And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

- Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel; Ezek. 17:2

- And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; Matt. 13:3

- That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. Matt. 13:35

4. What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

- For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. Ezek. 34:11

- I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment. Ezek. 34:16

- For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10

5. And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

- He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Isa. 40:11

- The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. Zeph. 3:17

- It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found. Luke 15:32

6. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.

- And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Luke 15:9

- Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. Phil. 2:17

- For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. 1 Pet. 2:25

7. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

- And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. Luke 5:31

- I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:32

- It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found. Luke 15:32

8. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?

- As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. Ezek. 34:12

- And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Luke 11:9

9. And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.

10. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

- Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. Isa. 49:13

- Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Matt. 18:10

- And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. Luke 2:10

11. And he said, A certain man had two sons:

- And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. Gen. 25:26

- But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. Matt. 21:28

- Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Matt. 24:40

12. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

- Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: Deut. 21:16

- But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his. Deut. 21:17

- For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. Mark 12:44

13. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

- Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. Prov. 29:3

- But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. Luke 15:30

- Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. Rom. 13:13

14. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

- He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. Prov. 21:17

- For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. Prov. 23:21

- And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. Acts 11:28

15. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

- And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven-footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Lev. 11:7

- Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries. 2 Chron. 12:8

- When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. Luke 8:34

16. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

- I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. Ps. 142:4

- Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Isa. 55:2

- They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. Lam. 4:5

17. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

- Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness; 1 Kings 8:47

- Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. Jer. 31:19

- And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Luke 16:23

18. I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

- I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. Ps. 32:5

- Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Ps. 51:6

- Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD. Jer. 3:13

19. And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

- For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. Ps. 84:10

- When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. Luke 5:8

- Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Luke 7:6

20. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

- Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. Ps. 103:13

- Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD. Jer. 31:20

- Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ezek. 33:11

21. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

- Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Ps. 51:4

- That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD. Ezek. 16:63

- But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. 1 Cor. 8:12

22. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

- And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; Gen. 41:42

- I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. Isa. 61:10

- And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. Zech. 3:4

23. And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

- And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. Gen. 18:7

- Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. Neh. 8:10

- Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: Isa. 65:13

24. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

- And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die. Gen. 45:28

- So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Prov. 3:4

- And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: Luke 15:29

26. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.

- For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. Gen. 24:65

- And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. Luke 1:62

- Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate, Acts 10:17

27. And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

- And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. Gen. 18:7

- For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; Philem. 1:15

- Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. Heb. 11:19

28. And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

- But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. Gen. 4:5

- But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. Jonah 4:1

- They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. Luke 7:32

29. And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

- If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he. Eccles. 6:3

- Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. Isa. 58:2

- The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. Luke 18:11

- Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. John 17:24

- He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Rom. 8:32
