1. And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

- And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. Mark 10:2

- And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, Luke 19:47

- And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. John 8:2

2. And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

- Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? John 2:18

- Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. John 10:24

- And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? Acts 4:7

3. And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

- But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? Matt. 15:3

- And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. Luke 22:68

- Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Col. 4:6

4. The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

- For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. Luke 7:28

- For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. Luke 7:33

- He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. John 1:23

5. And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

- But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. Luke 7:30

- And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. John 1:34

- Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. John 5:33

6. But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

- And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. Matt. 14:5

- But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. Luke 7:26

- And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. Luke 7:29

7. And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

- Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Isa. 6:10

- They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. Isa. 44:18

- And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. Matt. 22:46

8. And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

- A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. Matt. 16:4

- If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. Luke 11:18

- And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. Luke 22:68

9. Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

- Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it. Ps. 80:8

- Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: Isa. 5:1

- Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: Matt. 21:33

10. And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

- Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. Neh. 9:30

- But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods. Jer. 44:5

- Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: Luke 11:49

11. And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

- Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. 2 Sam. 10:4

- But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 2 Chron. 36:16

- Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. Neh. 9:26

12. And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

- And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight. 2 Kings 1:13

- And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Acts 19:16

- But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. 1 Cor. 8:12

13. Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

- What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? Isa. 5:4

- And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. Luke 9:35

- But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, Gal. 4:4

14. But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

- Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. Gen. 37:20

- And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. Matt. 26:4

- Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Heb. 1:2

15. So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

- And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. 1 Kings 21:13

- And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: John 19:17

- Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Heb. 13:12

16. He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

- And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. Neh. 9:37

- But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Matt. 22:7

- Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. Acts 13:46

17. And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

- The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. Ps. 118:22

- Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isa. 28:16

- And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; Eph. 2:20

18. Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

- And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Isa. 8:14

- Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Dan. 2:34

- And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Pet. 2:8

19. And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

- But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet. Matt. 21:46

- And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. Matt. 26:4

- And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him. Luke 19:48

20. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

- Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. Matt. 22:15

- And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. Luke 6:7

- And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: Luke 11:53

21. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

- They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. Ps. 12:2

- And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

- The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. John 3:2

22. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

- And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. Luke 2:1

- After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. Acts 5:37

- Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Rom. 13:7

23. But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

- But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Luke 5:22

- And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. John 2:25

- For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. 1 Cor. 3:19

24. Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.

- And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. Matt. 20:2

- But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. John 19:15

- And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. John 19:19

25. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

- So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Gen. 1:27

- Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Rom. 13:7

- Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. 1 Pet. 2:17

26. And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

- He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. Job 5:13

- And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him. Luke 13:17

- And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. Luke 20:40

27. Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

- Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. Acts 4:2

- For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. Acts 23:8

- Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 1 Cor. 15:12

28. Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

- And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. Gen. 38:8

- If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her. Deut. 25:5

- Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. Ruth 4:10

29. There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

- And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? Gen. 15:2

- And if a man shall lie with his uncle's wife, he hath uncovered his uncle's nakedness: they shall bear their sin; they shall die childless. Lev. 20:20

- And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. Acts 19:14

30. And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

- And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. Gen. 38:8

- If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her. Deut. 25:5

- So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son. Ruth 4:13

31. And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

- And if a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an unclean thing: he hath uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless. Lev. 20:21

- But if the priest's daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father's house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father's meat: but there shall be no stranger eat thereof. Lev. 22:13

- I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 1 Tim. 5:14

32. Last of all the woman died also.

- And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. Gen. 38:12

- One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. Eccles. 1:4

- And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Heb. 9:27

33. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

- Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. John 11:24

- For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. Acts 23:8

- And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Acts 24:15

34. And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

- And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. Luke 16:8

- They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Luke 17:27

- Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 1 Tim. 4:3

35. But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

- And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:40

- Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. John 11:24

- Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. Rev. 3:4

36. Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

- For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal. 3:26

- Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2

- Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. Rev. 20:6

37. Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

- Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. Ex. 3:6

- So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria. 2 Chron. 30:6

- The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. Acts 3:13

38. For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

- And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. Ezek. 37:3

- Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: John 11:25

- Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. 6:11

39. Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

- And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: Mark 12:32

- And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: Luke 20:21

- And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God. Acts 23:9

40. And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

- He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. Job 5:13

- And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. Matt. 22:46

- And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. Mark 12:34

41. And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?

- While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Matt. 22:41

- He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: Luke 1:32

- And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. Luke 18:38

42. And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

- The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Ps. 110:1

- Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. Isa. 9:7

- But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Mic. 5:2

43. Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

- Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: Phil. 2:9

- Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. Heb. 2:8

- And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Rev. 19:16

44. David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

- The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Ps. 110:1

- But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Mic. 5:2

- For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

45. Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

- And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: Matt. 5:1

- Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Matt. 23:1

- Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. 1 Tim. 5:20

46. Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

- Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Luke 11:43

- And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them. Luke 14:7

- Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Phil. 2:3

47. Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

- To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! Isa. 10:2

- For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 2 Tim. 3:6

- My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. James 3:1
