A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. - Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. Song 8:11 - Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: Isa. 5:1 - For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. Matt. 25:14 2. And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. - That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; Judg. 6:8 - Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets. 2 Kings 17:13 - And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: 2 Chron. 36:15 3. Matt. 2:13 8. And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. - And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him. Matt. 26:50 - Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Acts 2:23 - Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Heb. 13:12 9. What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. - Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Matt. 21:43 - But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Matt. 22:7 - And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean; from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. Acts 18:6 10. And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: - The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. Ps. 118:22 - Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isa. 28:16 - As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Rom. 9:33 11. This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? - This is the LORD's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. Ps. 118:23 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isa. 9:6 - This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working. Isa. 28:29 12. And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way. - And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine. Mark 11:18 - But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. Mark 11:32 - Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. John 7:30 13. And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. - And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. Matt. 17:25 - And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. Luke 2:1 - Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Rom. 13:7 15. Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it. - And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. Matt. 20:2 - This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. John 8:6 - And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. Rev. 6:6 16. And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's. - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Gen. 1:27 - But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. John 19:15 - And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. John 19:19 17. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him. - He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. - And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. Gen. 38:8 - If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her. Deut. 25:5 - And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? Ruth 1:11 20. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. - And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? Gen. 15:2 - And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him. Lev. 20:21 - So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son. Ruth 4:13 - I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 1 Tim. 5:14 22. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. - And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. Gen. 38:12 - One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. Eccles. 1:4 - And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Heb. 9:27 23. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. - Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. John 11:24 - For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. Acts 23:8 - And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Acts 24:15 24. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? - Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Gen. 18:14 - For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: Job 19:25 - For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. John 20:9 25. For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. - Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. Luke 20:36 - So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 1 Cor. 15:42 - Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2 26. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? - Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. Ex. 3:6 - And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. Ex. 3:15 - Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Luke 20:37 27. He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. - And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? Mark 12:24 - (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Rom. 4:17 - For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. Rom. 14:9 28. And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? - Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 5:19 - Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Matt. 22:35 - And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Luke 10:25 29. And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: - Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Ex. 20:3 - Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: Deut. 6:4 - As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. 1 Cor. 8:4 30. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. - And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Deut. 6:5 - And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. Deut. 30:6 - For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:3 31. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. - Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD. Lev. 19:18 - Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Matt. 7:12 - He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Matt. 19:18 32. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: - Unto thee it was showed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him. Deut. 4:35 - Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else. Deut. 4:39 - Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Isa. 46:9 33. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. - And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sam. 15:22 - For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. Hos. 6:6 - Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Mic. 6:6 34. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. - They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking. Job 32:15 - And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. Matt. 22:46 - For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. Luke 21:15 35. And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the son of David? - And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. Matt. 9:27 - In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. - The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. 2 Sam. 23:2 - The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Ps. 110:1 - For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 1 Cor. 15:25 37. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly. - Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Matt. 1:23 - Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; Rom. 1:3 - I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Rev. 22:16 38. And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, - All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. Matt. 23:3 - Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Luke 11:43 - Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 1 Pet. 3:3 39. And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: - Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: Prov. 25:6 - And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them. Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. - To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! Isa. 10:2 - But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Matt. 6:7 - For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 2 Tim. 3:6 41. And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. - And they received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to make it withal. And they brought yet unto him free offerings every morning. Ex. 36:3 - But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD. 2 Kings 12:9 - These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come. John 8:20 42. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. - Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. Mal. 3:10 - And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. Luke 10:27 - Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. 1 Tim. 5:5 43. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: - But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. Luke 12:48 - How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 2 Cor. 8:2 - Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9:7 44. For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. - And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
