And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. - The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Isa. 61:1 - And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. Matt. 4:23 - And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, - Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; Matt. 4:12 - Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? Matt. 9:14 - For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. Matt. 14:3 3. And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? - The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; Deut. 18:15 - Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. Mal. 3:1 - She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. John 11:27 4. Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: - And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither. Gen. 45:13 - And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Luke 7:21 - For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. Acts 4:20 5. The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. - Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? - Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, Matt. 3:5 - That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Eph. 4:14 - But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. James 1:6 8. But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. - And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite. 2 Kings 1:8 - And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: Zech. 13:4 - And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Matt. 3:4 9. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. - For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. Matt. 11:13 - And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. Matt. 14:5 - And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; Luke 1:76 10. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. - The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isa. 40:3 - Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. Mal. 3:1 - For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Matt. 3:3 11. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. - Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Matt. 18:10 - For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1 Cor. 15:9 - Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; Eph. 3:8 12. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. - And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? Matt. 21:23 - And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. Luke 7:29 - The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Luke 16:16 13. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. - Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Matt. 5:17 - And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:27 - For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me. John 5:46 14. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. - Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: Mal. 4:5 - And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Luke 1:17 - And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. John 1:21 15. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. - Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matt. 13:9 - If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. Mark 4:23 - He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. Rev. 2:7 16. But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, - What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee? Lam. 2:13 - O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Matt. 12:34 - Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. Matt. 23:36 17. And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. - And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them. 1 Kings 1:40 - To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. Isa. 28:12 - I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation. Jer. 15:17 18. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. - But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever: Jer. 35:6 - For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. Luke 1:15 - The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? John 7:20 19. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. - And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. Matt. 9:10 - And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. Luke 15:2 - And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. Luke 19:7 20. Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: - But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. Ps. 81:11 - Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. Isa. 1:2 - And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. Rev. 16:11 21. Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. - Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. Matt. 15:21 - And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. Mark 6:45 - And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. Luke 9:10 22. But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. - Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. Matt. 10:15 - But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Matt. 12:36 - Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 1 John 4:17 23. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. - But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. Gen. 13:13 - For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: Isa. 14:13 - And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: Matt. 4:13 24. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. - For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her. Lam. 4:6 - Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. Matt. 10:15 - But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. Matt. 11:22 25. At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. - Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. Ps. 8:2 - For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 1 Cor. 1:19 - But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 1 Cor. 1:27 26. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. - Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters. Job 33:13 - Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Isa. 46:10 - Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 2 Tim. 1:9 27. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matt. 28:18 - No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. John 1:18 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6 28. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. - To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. Isa. 28:12 - For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul. Jer. 31:25 - In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. John 7:37 29. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. - Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. Jer. 6:16 - Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. Matt. 21:5 - For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. John 13:15 30. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. - Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Prov. 3:17 - He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Mic. 6:8 - For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:3 |
