Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, - And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Matt. 15:10 - And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, Mark 12:38 - Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, Luke 20:45 2. Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: - And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not. Ezra 7:25 - And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. Neh. 8:4 - For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. Mal. 2:7 3. All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. - Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Matt. 11:28 - Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, - Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: Prov. 25:6 - And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them. Luke 14:7 - But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. Luke 14:10 7. And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. - Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? John 1:38 - The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. John 3:2 - Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. John 20:16 8. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. - Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand. 2 Cor. 1:24 - My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. James 3:1 - Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Rev. 22:9 9. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. - A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? Mal. 1:6 - If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Matt. 7:11 - Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, Eph. 3:15 10. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. - But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. Matt. 23:8 - And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. Luke 5:5 - And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. Luke 8:24 11. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. - But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. Luke 22:26 - If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. John 13:14 - But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Phil. 2:7 12. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. - A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. Prov. 29:23 - Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 18:4 - Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 1 Pet. 5:6 13. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. - Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened. Zech. 11:17 - Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. Luke 11:52 - Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 Thess. 2:16 14. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. - Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. Ex. 22:22 - But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Matt. 6:7 - Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. Mark 12:40 15. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. - Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Acts 2:10 - Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. Acts 13:43 - For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. Gal. 6:13 16. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! - Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: Matt. 5:33 - Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Matt. 15:14 - But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. James 5:12 17. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? - Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? Ps. 94:8 - Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD. Jer. 8:7 - There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. Rom. 3:11 18. And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. - Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock. Lev. 1:2 - Moreover he made an altar of brass, twenty cubits the length thereof, and twenty cubits the breadth thereof, and ten cubits the height thereof. 2 Chron. 4:1 - Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Matt. 5:23 19. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? - Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy. Ex. 29:37 - And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. Ex. 30:29 - And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? John 9:40 20. Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. - Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: Matt. 5:33 - But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Matt. 5:34 - But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Matt. 5:37 21. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. - I have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide in for ever. 1 Kings 8:13 - In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. Eph. 2:22 - For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Col. 2:9 22. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. - The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD's throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men. Ps. 11:4 - Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? Isa. 66:1 - But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Matt. 5:34 23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. - And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD's: it is holy unto the LORD. Lev. 27:30 - And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sam. 15:22 - To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. Prov. 21:3 24. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. - Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Matt. 7:4 - Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Matt. 15:14 - And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Matt. 19:24 25. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. - These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. Matt. 15:20 - And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Mark 7:4 - Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. Titus 1:15 26. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. - O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? Jer. 4:14 - Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Heb. 10:22 - Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. James 4:8 27. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. - And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. Num. 19:16 - Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. Luke 11:44 - Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? Acts 23:3 28. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. - But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. 1 Sam. 16:7 - But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, Matt. 23:5 - And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. Luke 16:15 29. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, - Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb. Job 21:32 - Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Luke 11:47 - Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Acts 2:29 30. And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. - And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: 2 Chron. 36:15 - In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion. Jer. 2:30 - And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Matt. 21:35 31. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. - And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. Josh. 24:22 - Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: Acts 7:52 - Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: 1 Thess. 2:15 32. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. - But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. Gen. 15:16 - And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel. Num. 32:14 - Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 Thess. 2:16 33. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? - But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Matt. 3:7 - O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Matt. 12:34 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44 34. Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: - But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; Matt. 10:17 - But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. Matt. 10:23 - Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. Acts 13:1 35. That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. - And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. Gen. 4:8 - Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it. 2 Chron. 24:22 - By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. Heb. 11:4 36. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. - For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord GOD. Ezek. 12:25 - Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Matt. 24:34 - Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. Matt. 27:25 37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! - As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: Deut. 32:11 - The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust. Ruth 2:12 - Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. Ps. 63:7 38. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. - And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house? 1 Kings 9:8 - Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers. Isa. 1:7 - Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest. Mic. 3:12 39. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. - Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. Ps. 118:26 - And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. Matt. 21:9 - Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. John 14:19 |
