Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. - Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. - Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee? Deut. 32:6 - But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. Isa. 29:23 - For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Rom. 8:15 10. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. - And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. Dan. 7:27 - From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matt. 4:17 - He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. Matt. 26:42 11. Give us this day our daily bread. - And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. Ex. 16:21 - Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Prov. 30:8 - He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure. Isa. 33:16 12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. - Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: - Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Prov. 23:4 - So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Luke 12:21 - Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. James 5:3 20. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: - Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. Matt. 19:21 - Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. Luke 12:33 - For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Heb. 10:34 21. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. - Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Prov. 4:23 - And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure. Isa. 33:6 - Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Col. 3:2 22. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. - I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? Job 31:1 - Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Prov. 4:25 - If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light. Luke 11:36 23. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! - Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Prov. 26:12 - And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matt. 5:29 - And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Matt. 7:3 24. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. - And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 1 Kings 18:21 - Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Rom. 6:16 - But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 1 Tim. 6:9 25. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? - Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Matt. 6:34 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Phil. 4:6 - Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1 Pet. 5:7 26. Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? - Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat. Job 38:41 - He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. Ps. 147:9 - Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. Matt. 10:29 27. Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? - The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Ps. 90:10 - I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. Eccles. 3:14 - Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. Matt. 5:36 28. And why take ye thought for raiment?
