1. Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

- That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. Rom. 9:2

- For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: Rom. 9:3

- And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 1 Cor. 9:20

2. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

- They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. John 16:2

- I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. Acts 22:3

- And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. Gal. 1:14

3. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

- But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Rom. 9:31

- Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. Gal. 5:4

- And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Phil. 3:9

4. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

- Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Matt. 5:17

- Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 2 Cor. 3:6

- In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. Heb. 8:13

5. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

- Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD. Lev. 18:5

- And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them. Ezek. 20:11

- And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. Luke 10:28

6. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

- It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Deut. 30:12

- Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell? Prov. 30:4

- And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. John 3:13

7. Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

- It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Deut. 30:12

- I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right. Isa. 45:19

- Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down: Amos 9:2

8. But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

- But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. Deut. 30:14

- I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry: and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory. Isa. 46:13

- That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: Acts 17:27

9. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

- Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. Matt. 10:32

- And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:31

- And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil. 2:11

10. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

- But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. Luke 8:15

- Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Gal. 2:16

- Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 1 John 4:15

11. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

- Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. Ps. 25:3

- Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isa. 28:16

- And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me. Isa. 49:23

12. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

- The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) Acts 10:36

- Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: Rom. 3:29

- For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 1 Tim. 2:5

13. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

- They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. Ps. 22:5

- And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Ps. 50:15

- And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. Joel 2:32

14. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

- And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15

- And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. Acts 8:31

- To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Acts 26:18

15. And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

- How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! Isa. 52:7

- Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off. Nah. 1:15

- And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Eph. 6:15

16. But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

- Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? Isa. 53:1

- And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. Acts 28:24

- And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith. 2 Thess. 3:2

17. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

- For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Rom. 1:16

- For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Cor. 1:18

- For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 1 Thess. 2:13

18. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

- As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 1 Kings 18:10

- And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Isa. 49:6

- Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: Col. 1:6

19. But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

- They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. Deut. 32:21

- And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree? Isa. 44:19

- I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. Rom. 11:11

20. But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.

- Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee. Isa. 55:5

- I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name. Isa. 65:1

- What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. Rom. 9:30

21. But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

- I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts; Isa. 65:2

- And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear. Jer. 25:4

- O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Matt. 23:37
