1. Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

- By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. Prov. 8:15

- Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. John 19:11

- Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 1 Pet. 2:13

2. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

- And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense. Num. 16:35

- My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change: Prov. 24:21

- For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both? Prov. 24:22

3. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

- Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, Titus 3:1

- Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. 1 Pet. 2:14

- And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 1 Pet. 3:13

4. For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

- And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment. 2 Chron. 19:6

- The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul. Prov. 20:2

- Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Matt. 5:25

5. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

- And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. 1 Sam. 24:5

- And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men. Acts 24:16

- Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. 1 Pet. 2:14

6. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

- Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: Ex. 18:21

- If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. Ex. 18:23

- And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. Luke 2:1

7. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

- Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Ex. 20:12

- My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change: Prov. 24:21

- They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. Matt. 22:21

8. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

- Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD. Lev. 19:18

- Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Matt. 7:12

- For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Gal. 5:14

9. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

- Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD. Lev. 19:18

- And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. Mark 12:31

- If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: James 2:8

10. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

- On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Matt. 22:40

- For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Gal. 5:14

- And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. Col. 3:14

11. And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

- While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. Matt. 25:5

- Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Eph. 5:14

- Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 1 Thess. 5:6

12. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

- And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Eph. 5:11

- Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Eph. 6:11

- But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 1 Thess. 5:8

13. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

- Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: Prov. 23:20

- Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 1 Cor. 6:9

- For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 1 Pet. 4:3

14. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

- But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Cor. 9:27

- For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal. 3:27

- Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 1 Pet. 2:11
