↥ Rom. 4NT with xrefs 1. What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? - And Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? Gen. 12:18 - Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. Isa. 51:2 - Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? James 2:21 2. For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. - Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Rom. 3:27 - Not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph. 2:9 - Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, Phil. 3:8 3. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. - And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. Gen. 15:6 - Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Gal. 3:6 - And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. James 2:23 4. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. - Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. Matt. 20:12 - And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Rom. 11:6 - Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. Gal. 5:2 5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. - Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Rom. 3:28 - Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Gal. 2:16 - And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Phil. 3:9 6. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, - Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God: Ps. 146:5 - Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Matt. 5:6 - For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Luke 1:48 7. Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. - Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Ps. 32:1 - Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Ps. 51:9 - Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. Mic. 7:18 8. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. - Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. Ps. 32:2 - Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isa. 53:12 - To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Cor. 5:19 9. Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. - Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. Rom. 3:30 - There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal. 3:28 - But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. Eph. 2:13 10. How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. - And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. Gen. 17:23 - Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised. 1 Cor. 7:18 - For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Gal. 5:6 11. And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: - This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. Gen. 17:10 - Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: Rom. 3:22 - Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. Gal. 3:7 12. And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. - And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. Matt. 3:9 - And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. Luke 19:9 - Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. Rom. 9:7 13. For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. - And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. Gen. 12:7 - Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Gal. 3:16 - And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal. 3:29 14. For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: - I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Gal. 2:21 - For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Gal. 3:18 - Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. Gal. 4:30 15. Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. - For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; Rom. 2:12 - (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Rom. 5:13 - For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Gal. 3:10 16. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, - Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Rom. 3:24 - That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. Rom. 9:8 - And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. Gal. 3:8 17. (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. - And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Gen. 1:3 - As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Gen. 17:4 - For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. John 5:21 18. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. - And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. Gen. 15:5 - For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? Rom. 8:24 - Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. Heb. 11:12 19. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb: - Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? Gen. 17:17 - Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Gen. 18:11 - Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Heb. 11:11 20. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; - And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. Gen. 15:6 - And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. Heb. 11:19 22. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. - And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. Gen. 15:6 - For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Rom. 4:3 - And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. James 2:23 23. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; - For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Rom. 15:4 - Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. 1 Cor. 9:10 - All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Tim. 3:16 24. But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; - Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Acts 2:24 - For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call. Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. - But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isa. 53:5 - And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 1 Cor. 15:17 - For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Cor. 5:21 |
