1. Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

- He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Prov. 4:4

- For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Matt. 5:18

- He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Heb. 10:28

2. For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

- And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. Lev. 20:10

- The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. 1 Cor. 7:4

- The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. 1 Cor. 7:39

3. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

- Thou shalt not commit adultery. Ex. 20:14

- But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. Matt. 5:32

- I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 1 Tim. 5:14

4. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

- Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. John 15:8

- For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. Gal. 2:19

- Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; Col. 2:14

5. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

- What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. Rom. 6:21

- So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Rom. 8:8

- Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. James 1:15

6. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

- Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom. 6:4

- That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Rom. 8:4

- Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 2 Cor. 3:6

7. What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

- Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's. Ex. 20:17

- The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. Ps. 19:7

- Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Rom. 3:20

8. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

- If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. John 15:22

- Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. Rom. 4:15

- Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: Rom. 5:20

9. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

- But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. Gen. 3:3

- And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Gen. 3:6

- Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Rom. 3:20

10. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

- Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD. Lev. 18:5

- And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them. Ezek. 20:11

- Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. James 1:15

11. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

- And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Gen. 3:13

- Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. Prov. 9:17

- That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; Eph. 4:22

12. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

- The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. Ps. 19:8

- The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. Ps. 19:9

- But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; 1 Tim. 1:8

13. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

14. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

- Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Ps. 51:5

- That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6

- What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; Rom. 3:9

15. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

- For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Gal. 5:17

- From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? James 4:1

- Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 1 Pet. 2:11

16. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

- Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way. Ps. 119:128

- The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. Ps. 19:8

- But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; 1 Tim. 1:8

17. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

- Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. Ps. 90:8

- Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Rom. 6:6

- And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Gal. 5:24

18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

- And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Gen. 6:5

- For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Mark 7:21

- Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Eph. 2:3

19. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

- And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Matt. 21:30

- Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Rom. 8:7

- Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 1 Pet. 2:11

20. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

- But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Isa. 64:6

- Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Rom. 6:12

- For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Gal. 5:17

21. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

- Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Ps. 119:133

- Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Isa. 6:5

- Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. John 8:34

22. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

- Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. Ps. 119:35

- I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. Ps. 40:8

- That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; Eph. 3:16

23. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

- For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. Rom. 7:15

- From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? James 4:1

- Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 1 Pet. 2:11

24. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

- I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. Ps. 6:6

- For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Cor. 7:10

- And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Heb. 2:15

25. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

- If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. John 8:36

- But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Rom. 8:9

- But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 15:57
